The lagoon of Santa Luzia can be reached from Quintamar in ten minutes’ walk. From here a miniature railway brings you to Barril beach, a former tuna fishing residence, now offering refreshment and food in two cafes. During summer months a water taxi service takes passengers to a quieter beach from Santa Luzia. The quality of sea water is one of the best in Europe, local beaches qualify for the EU blue flag. Low and high tide enriches the experience of this nature spot. Barril beach is always popular but never gets too overcrowded, if you seek more privacy just keep walking along the beach to the right. The left hand side brings you to the Santa Luzia beach, Terra Estreita and eventually after about 45 minutes walk to the Isla Tavira which is as far as one can walk without getting wet. The island continues on the other side of the breakwater towards Cabanas.
